REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEIRUT – An Indonesian soldier has been confirmed killed in an attack on the UNIFIL headquarters in southern Lebanon on Sunday. Meanwhile, another soldier is in critical condition.

From information obtained by Republika from Lebanon, the body of the fallen TNI member has not yet been evacuated and remains at the UNIFIL post in Marjayoun, Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the injured individual is reported to be in critical condition. The person is being treated at St George Hospital in Beirut.

There has been no official statement from TNI Headquarters or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding this information. Republika has attempted to contact TNI Headquarters and the Foreign Ministry but has not received an official response.

On Sunday, the Indonesian UN peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon came under attack following Israeli aggression in the area.

Indonesian forces were attacked at the base in Aadshit al-Qusayr, in the Marjayoun district in the south, according to the Lebanese National News Agency. Al Jadeed News broadcaster reported that there were fatalities and helicopters were transporting the wounded.

Kandice Ardiel, spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), has confirmed that several peacekeepers were injured after an explosion at a UN position in southern Lebanon.

“A projectile exploded this evening at a UNIFIL location near Adshit al-Qusayr, resulting in several peacekeepers being injured,” Ardiel said, as quoted by the National News Agency.

“One peacekeeper was tragically killed last night when a projectile exploded at a UNIFIL position near Adchit Al Qusayr,” she said, adding that another was “severely injured”.

“We do not know the origin of the projectile. We have initiated an investigation to determine all the circumstances.”
