Breaking: Massive Explosion Shakes Tehran, Iran
A massive explosion shook the centre of Tehran on Monday (8/6/2026). Subsequent explosions followed, believed to have originated from air defence systems within the capital. According to AFP sources, the initial blast shook the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building, and a press conference venue for journalists was hit by a missile.
However, the Iranian media outlet Fars reported that the exact location and source of the explosions remain unknown, noting that air defences were activated in several parts of Tehran simultaneously. This escalation comes as tensions surge between Iran and Israel. Following Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Gaza over the weekend, Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel on Sunday, prompting a response from Tel Aviv, despite US President Donald Trump’s calls for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to exercise restraint, as reported by Axios.
In an update on Monday afternoon, Iran reportedly targeted petrochemical facilities in Israel. It remains unclear whether there have been any casualties from the mutual attacks. The current situation is expected to impact ongoing discussions with the US aimed at achieving peace in the region. This follows an incident three months ago where US-Israeli attacks on Iran led to Iranian retaliatory strikes across the Arab region and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy shipping route, by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
“It is very natural that the diplomatic process initiated to end this imposed war will be affected,” stated Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press conference in Tehran attended by AFP.
