A magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred off the southern coast of the Philippines on Monday (8/6/2026). The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and regional warning centres have issued tsunami warnings following the seismic event.

β€œThe offshore earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometres (22 miles) off the coast of Mindanao Island,” the USGS reported, as cited by AFP, at approximately 07:22 WIB.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre stated in its notification that tsunami waves could occur within the next three hours. In addition to the Philippines, tsunami warnings have been issued for the coasts of Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea.

So far, one death has been reported due to the earthquake in the Philippines, with four others injured.
