The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) opened slightly higher on Wednesday (26/8/2026), briefly reclaiming the psychological level of 6,500. However, within four minutes of the market opening, the index was recorded down 1.05% at 6,429.57.

According to Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) data at 09:00 WIB, the JCI stood at 6,507.14, up 5.47 points or 0.08% from the previous close of 6,501.67. The index opened at 6,507 and in the first four minutes of trading touched a high of 6,509 and a low of 6,429.

The JCI’s decline was accompanied by 124 stocks rising, 388 stocks falling, and 187 stocks unchanged. Transaction value at the start of trading reached Rp 1.37 trillion with a trading volume of 3.02 billion shares. Transaction frequency was recorded at 230,000 times.

Indonesia’s financial markets reopened on Wednesday (26/8/2026) after the national holiday for the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday on Tuesday.

Domestically, investor attention is focused on the fit-and-proper test for Bank Indonesia (BI) governor candidate Destry Damayanti, as well as developments in the establishment of a strategic mineral and commodity exchange.

Globally, markets are awaiting key US data, ranging from inflation and economic growth to personal income and spending.

Commission XI of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) is scheduled to hold a fit-and-proper test for Bank Indonesia governor candidate Destry Damayanti on Wednesday at 10:00 WIB. Commission XI Chairman M. Misbakhun confirmed the agenda would proceed through a public hearing. “We scheduled it according to the results of the internal meeting,” he told CNBC Indonesia.

Destry is the sole candidate for BI Governor submitted by President Prabowo Subianto to the DPR. She currently serves as Acting Governor of BI after Perry Warjiyo resigned in July. Previously, Destry served as Senior Deputy Governor of BI since 2019. She has also worked as an economist at Mandiri Sekuritas and Bank Mandiri, as well as a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS).

Market participants will scrutinise Destry’s views on the direction of monetary policy, rupiah stability, inflation, and efforts to maintain foreign capital flows.

Asia-Pacific markets moved mixed on Wednesday (26/8/2026) amid rising trade tensions between the United States and Canada. Market participants are also cautious ahead of the release of key US inflation data that serves as the main reference for the Federal Reserve.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index fell 0.5% on Wednesday. South Korea’s Kospi index weakened 0.12%, while Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index rose 0.34%.

Market sentiment was overshadowed by the escalation of the US-Canada trade conflict after Ottawa announced retaliatory tariffs on US products on Tuesday. The move was made on a “dollar-for-dollar” basis in response to the 50% tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump last weekend, following the failure of trade negotiations between the two countries.

Canada’s new tariffs cover more than 700 types of US goods worth approximately US$20 billion. The value is equivalent to the latest import tariffs previously imposed by Trump on a range of Canadian products, from wine and cement to hockey sticks.

In addition to trade war developments, investors are also awaiting the release of the US personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index for July. The data, which measures changes in the prices of goods and services, is one of the inflation indicators most closely watched by the Fed in determining its monetary policy direction.
