A senior Iranian military officer has unexpectedly stated that new battles and war with the United States (US) are now an open possibility, suggesting such a conflict may become unavoidable.

Citing AFP reports, this warning emerges amidst a heating diplomatic situation caused by a stalemate and the stagnation of ongoing bilateral negotiations between Tehran and Washington. The Deputy Commander of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Military Command, Mohammad Jafar Assadi, asserted that Washington’s unilateral stubbornness is the trigger for this deadlock.

“The United States demands our total surrender, and the Iranian nation will never surrender,” Assadi stated in an official statement on Tuesday (2/6/2026).

“Without surrender, war cannot be avoided,” Assadi added, noting that without a balanced compromise from Washington, armed confrontation remains the only remaining path.

Previously, conflict between the US and Iran erupted on 28 February 2026, after the US and Israel launched attacks against several Iranian military targets and strategic facilities. The conflict subsequently escalated into a regional crisis involving Iranian retaliatory strikes and disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Following several weeks of fighting and diplomatic efforts mediated by Pakistan, both nations agreed to a temporary ceasefire on 8 April 2026. The agreement was initially set for two weeks before being extended to allow space for further peace negotiations.

Nevertheless, the situation on the ground remains fragile, as both sides have repeatedly accused each other of violating the ceasefire. Tensions have also risen due to Israeli attacks in Lebanon and disputes regarding maritime access in the Strait of Hormuz.

As of early June 2026, peace negotiations have yet to produce a permanent agreement, and Iran announced a temporary suspension of negotiations with the US yesterday due to the escalation of Israeli actions in Lebanon since the weekend.
