Iran has stated that it has provided a response to the latest proposal from the United States intended to end the prolonged war in the Middle East region. This announcement comes amidst reports from Iranian media suggesting that Washington’s demands are excessive and difficult for Tehran to accept.

Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed on Monday (18/05/2026) that communication between the two nations is ongoing through Pakistani mediation. However, he did not disclose the specific details of the proposal or the nature of the response sent by Iran to the US.

“As we announced yesterday, our concerns have been conveyed to the American side,” Baqaei stated during a press conference, as reported by AFP.

He added that the process of exchanging messages and negotiations is still underway, noting, “The exchange continues through the Pakistani mediator.”

Baqaei also maintained Iran’s core demands, which include the release of frozen Iranian assets abroad and the lifting of long-standing sanctions. “The points raised are Iranian demands that have been firmly maintained by the Iranian negotiating team in every round of negotiations,” he said.

Furthermore, he defended Iran’s requirement for the US to pay war reparations, describing the conflict as “illegal and groundless”. Regarding the possibility of further military confrontation, Baqaei stated that Iran is “fully prepared for all possibilities.”

Iran’s statement follows recent heavy threats from US President Donald Trump against Tehran. In a previous statement, Trump asserted that Iran must immediately accept the deal offered by Washington or face greater military consequences.

Trump’s latest threat was issued as negotiations between the two nations reached a deadlock, particularly concerning Iran’s nuclear programme, the US blockade of Iranian ports, and Tehran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy trade.

Previously, Trump stated that the US does not require assistance from China to end the conflict with Iran, asserting that Washington would win “peacefully or by other means”.

The US government is known to demand that Iran halt its nuclear programme, fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz for international shipping, and cease support for proxy groups in the Middle East.

Reports from the Iranian media outlet, Fars, suggest that Washington’s latest proposal contains demands considered too heavy for Tehran to bear. Nevertheless, diplomatic channels have not been entirely closed.

The US continues to maintain a blockade on Iranian ports as a form of economic pressure to force Tehran to accept Washington’s terms. Conversely, Iran has been strengthening its position in the Strait of Hormuz and is reportedly entering into several energy agreements with neighbouring countries such as Pakistan and Iraq.
