Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has proposed convening an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council to formulate diplomatic solutions for the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. The proposal was conveyed directly in a conversation with United States President Donald Trump.

According to an official statement from the Brazilian Presidential Office on Friday (21/8), Lula expressed regret over the ineffectiveness of the UN Security Council in addressing current global crises. He urged concrete steps through the body to find a peaceful way out of tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East.

During the discussion, the two leaders exchanged views on global geopolitical dynamics. The main focus of the conversation was on efforts to end the war in Ukraine and reduce escalation in Iran. Lula and Trump reportedly agreed on the importance of seeking compromise solutions to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has had wide-reaching global impacts.

In addition to global security issues, President Lula da Silva used the opportunity to protest US trade policy. He asserted that the tariff policy imposed by the Trump administration on Brazil lacks a strong basis.

“After noting that the tariffs have had a negative impact on both Brazil and the US, President Lula stated that continuing negotiations is the best option for both countries,” the official statement read.

Trade tensions peaked in mid-July, when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that Trump had instructed the US Trade Representative to impose a 25 percent tariff on most imported products from Brazil. The measure was taken on the grounds that President Lula was considered reluctant to negotiate in “good faith”.

Brazil’s push adds to the list of international pressure for the UN Security Council to take a more active role in maintaining global security stability.
