Brazil’s financial markets celebrated following the results of the first round of elections on Monday (05/10/2026). The Brazilian stock market staged a sharp rally after the first-round presidential election results surprised the market. The Ibovespa index surged 7.7% during Monday’s trading, hitting an all-time high.

The Ibovespa closed at 206,911.89, marking its largest daily gain since 24 March 2020. Trading activity also surged, with the transaction value of Ibovespa constituents reaching approximately R$79 billion, well above the daily average and one of the highest transaction values in history. Year-to-date (YTD), the Ibovespa has strengthened by about 28.4%, with gains occurring across almost all sectors.

The euphoria also spread to the foreign exchange market. The Brazilian Real strengthened 4.1% against the US dollar to around BRL 5 per USD, marking its largest daily appreciation in about four years.

The rally in Brazilian assets was triggered by the first-round election results, which showed Flávio Bolsonaro securing approximately 47% of the vote, narrowly leading President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who obtained around 4-5%. The result surprised the market, as several pre-election surveys had previously projected a three-percentage-point lead for Lula. Both candidates will compete again in the second round on 25 October 2026.

Investor optimism was further bolstered after the Liberal Party (PL), Bolsonaro’s party, recorded a stronger position in Congress. Its Senate seats increased from 15 to 28, while the party is projected to control 121 of the 513 seats in the lower house. This political constellation is seen as potentially expanding the space for implementing economic agendas should Bolsonaro win the second round. Several policies of interest to investors include government spending control, privatisation, and tax cuts.

Expectations of a more pro-market administration and more disciplined fiscal management subsequently drove investor interest in Brazilian assets. The financial sector was one of the primary beneficiaries. Bradesco shares surged by more than 13%, while several stocks sensitive to domestic economic conditions also recorded sharp increases.

A better fiscal outlook is also seen as potentially opening space for a continued cycle of interest rate cuts. Such conditions could reduce debtor burdens, improve credit payment quality, and encourage growth in bank lending.

Luise Coutinho, Head of Products and Allocation at HCI Advisors, noted that the rally reflects market expectations for an improvement in Brazil’s economic conditions. However, the sustainability of the Brazilian asset strength will depend heavily on the dynamics leading up to the second round and the policies that are ultimately implemented.

Positive sentiment also spread to state-owned enterprise stocks. Bruno Perri, Chief Economist and Co-Founder of Forum Investimentos, assessed that state companies could benefit from the expectation of more disciplined management.

Nevertheless, the very sharp rally in a short period also creates opportunities for profit-taking ahead of the second round of elections. Investors are now closely monitoring the developments of both candidates’ campaigns and the direction of proposed economic policies to determine if the rally in Brazilian assets has further room to continue.
