Brawl Perpetrators in Depok to Be Sent to Islamic Boarding Crash Courses During Ramadan
Depok Metropolitan Police have announced plans to rehabilitate street brawl perpetrators in Depok during Ramadan by enrolling them in intensive short-term Islamic boarding programmes (pesantren kilat) prepared by the force.
“One of our key concerns is the issue of brawling. One of the steps we will take is to enrol the youths involved in brawls in our intensive Islamic boarding programme,” Depok Metropolitan Police Chief Commissioner Abdul Waras told reporters on Wednesday (18 February 2026).
Abdul expressed hope that the pesantren kilat programme would help reduce brawling in Depok. He noted that street fights cause significant harm to the surrounding environment and the wider community.
“Essentially, we want to discourage our young people from engaging in brawls, because these are extremely damaging. If they persist and insist on brawling, we will place them in the intensive Islamic boarding programme at Depok Metropolitan Police,” he stressed.
Abdul also highlighted the firecracker wars and sarong fights that frequently occur during Ramadan. He urged the public to play an active role in preventing such incidents.
“This is certainly something we are studying, and our hope is that young people and the community can fill their Ramadan activities with positive pursuits. Firecrackers and similar activities are also prohibited under existing regulations and laws. We hope that people will refrain from disturbing others who are performing their worship,” he explained.
