Brantas River: One of most successful projects

The comprehensive development of Brantas River Basin is one of
the most successful projects in Indonesia.

Due to the construction of Dams and Barrages, Surabaya has
become safe against flood disasters. And the electricity
generated by hydraulic power plants could have changed Surabaya
into an industrial city.

At the same time, Brantas river basin has become a very good
granary area with irrigation projects and a large investment of
fertilizer, agricultural machinery and so on.

Japan has cooperated with the comprehensive development of
Brantas River Basin for 40 years. This year is the 40 years'
anniversary of the development.

Japan has long been the largest provider of official
development (ODA) to Indonesia, and has contributed about 62
percent of the total amount of the bilateral official assistance
between 1982 and 1999.

Major achievements by the Japanese ODA as follows; Semanggi
Flyover, Railway Development in Jabotabek area, Way Sekampung
irrigation infrastructure, comprehensive development of Brantas
river basin, the emergency medical center of Dr Cipto
Mangunkusumo Hospital, improvement of higher education (Bandung
Institute of Technology, Surabaya Polytechnics, etc).
