Brake Failure Suspected in Ten-Vehicle Pile-Up on Cipularang Toll Road
Ten-vehicle pile-up occurred at KM 93 on the Cipularang Toll Road toward Jakarta, with two people reported dead. The accident is believed to have been caused by a truck experiencing brake failure, according to preliminary police findings. ‘The initial suspicion is that the container truck experienced brake failure,’ said AKP Enggar Jati Nugroho, the head of the Traffic Unit of Purwakarta Police, at the Cipularang Toll Road, on Thursday (5/3/2026). Enggar said the container truck had problems with the braking system. Therefore, the truck’s speed was not controlled and it collided with the vehicles ahead. Head of Cipularang Induk PJR, Kompol Joko Prihantono, also said the crash was triggered by braking problems on the container vehicle. ‘It is suspected that the container vehicle with registration B-9367-UEL experienced brake problems,’ Kompol Joko Prihantono said. Panji Satriya, Head of Marketing and Communication at Jasamarga Metropolitan Tollroad’s Regional Division, said the accident occurred at 20:18 WIB. The accident has been handled by police. ‘The crash involved ten vehicles and all lanes were impassable. Field officers are still on site handling the situation,’ Panji said in a statement. According to on-site officers, two people died and four were seriously injured. All victims have been evacuated to Radjak Purwakarta Hospital for further treatment. ‘Jasa Marga apologises for the inconvenience experienced during the evacuation process,’ he said. Officers from Jasamarga Metropolitan Tollroad Representative Office 3, the toll road operator, were at the scene along with the Jalan Raya Patrol, rescue, tow, ambulance, and Mobile Customer Service (MCS). Currently, on-site officers are working to evacuate the victims and vehicles and will promptly implement the necessary traffic management. ‘Until now, the cause of the accident remains under investigation by the police,’ he added.
