The North Sumatra Regional Police Traffic Directorate stated that a multi-vehicle collision in Sibolangit District, Deli Serdang, was allegedly triggered by a truck transporting mineral water gallons that experienced brake failure. “It is suspected that the cause of the pile-up was a truck loaded with mineral water gallons travelling from Bandar Baru Village towards Medan City experiencing brake failure,” said North Sumatra Police Traffic Director, Senior Commissioner Achmad Fauzi Dalimunthe, in Sibolangit on Friday (17/7). Achmad explained that the truck then collided with several vehicles on Jalan Jamin Ginting, Sibolangit District, at around 10.30 a.m. Western Indonesia Time. “As a result of the incident, eight cars and one motorcycle were involved in the pile-up,” he said. According to Achmad, the truck driver and his assistant have been detained for further examination at the Pancur Batu Police Station. He added that based on CCTV footage from a nearby restaurant, the truck was travelling at high speed, causing bystanders in the vicinity to scatter to save themselves. Of the eight cars involved, seven were heading towards Medan City, while one was travelling towards Berastagi. “We are currently conducting a deeper investigation through the traffic accident inquiry process. We will provide further updates,” he stated. The pile-up resulted in 12 victims. Based on preliminary data, four people died, while eight other victims are receiving treatment at Adam Malik Hospital in Medan.
