The Head of Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, has requested that the government closely examine the rising prices of shallots. BPS survey results reveal that the national average price of shallots in the second week of May reached Rp 44,701 per kilogram, surpassing the Consumer Price Reference (HAP) limit of Rp 36,500–Rp 41,500.

Amalia shared this information during the Inflation Control Coordination Meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday (18/05/2026). “We may need to start closely monitoring our shallots because the price is already above the national upper limit of the Consumer HAP at Rp 44,071 per kilogram,” Amalia stated during the Ministry of Home Affairs’ YouTube broadcast.

Several regions have experienced significant changes in their Price Development Index (IPH). In Landak Regency, West Kalimantan, shallot prices reached Rp 60,000 per kilogram, representing an IPH increase of 24.13 per cent. “The price level is already 44.58 per cent above the HAP,” said Amalia.

Melawi Regency, West Kalimantan, also saw a substantial increase, with shallot prices reaching Rp 60,000 per kilogram, an IPH change of 22.63 per cent and 44.57 per cent above the Consumer HAP. Furthermore, shallot prices in Mempawah Regency, West Kalimantan, reached Rp 49,500 per kilogram, with an IPH change of 19.54 per cent and 19.28 per cent above the Consumer HAP. “We have flagged these with red figures,” Amalia noted.

In addition to shallots, granulated sugar is also a commodity under scrutiny by BPS. The national average price for the sweetener has reached Rp 18,874 per kilogram, exceeding the Consumer HAP of Rp 17,500–Rp 18,500. According to Amalia, sugar price increases have occurred in 125 regencies and cities. Among the highlighted areas is the Pegunungan Bintang Regency in Papua, where prices reached Rp 40,625 per kilogram, or 132 per cent above the HAP. Additionally, sugar prices in Pelalawan, Mempawah, North Luwu, Humbang, Hasundutan, Rokan Hilir, and North Tapanuli are also above the HAP, with some prices touching Rp 20,000 per kilogram.
