JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded diverse trends in public transport passenger movements in February 2026, one month ahead of Eid al-Fitr. Deputy for Social Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, revealed that the number of train passengers increased compared to the same period last year. β€œIn February 2026, the number of train passengers reached 43.27 million people, up 2.94% from the same period the previous year,” Ateng said in a BPS release at the BPS Head Office on Wednesday (1/4/2026). BPS recorded the number of sea passengers at 2.03 million people, growing 0.15% year-on-year. Meanwhile, ferry transport managed by ASDP also saw an increase. The number of passengers was recorded at 3.51 million people, up 1.49% from February 2025. On the other hand, a different trend occurred in air transport. BPS recorded the number of domestic flight passengers at 4.08 million people, down 7.23% from the same period the previous year. A decline also occurred in international air transport, with 1.51 million passengers, down 4.71% year-on-year. Not only passengers, but freight movements in several transport modes also showed declines. BPS reported that the amount of goods transported via domestic sea transport reached 38.77 million tonnes, down 1.78% from February 2025. A deeper decline occurred in freight rail transport. The volume was recorded at 4.39 million tonnes, down 19.74% year-on-year. Domestic air freight also experienced a decline in volume. The amount of goods transported was recorded at 50,000 tonnes, down 4.62% from the same period last year. These data indicate a shift in public mobility patterns ahead of Eid, where land and sea transport modes tend to increase, while air transport experiences a decline in both passengers and goods.
