BPS to use new inflation rating system in 2008

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) said it will use a new inflation rating system starting in July 2008 based upon a cost of living survey to be carried out this year.

"This year, we will conduct the cost of living survey to find a new package of commodities or a new consideration diagram because the inflation calculation diagram of 2002 has become outdated," BPS Chief Rusman Heriawan said here on Thursday.

He took as example of a change in consideration diagram by adding the number of territories to be put into data in each calculation of monthly inflation from 45 to 66 cities.

"We will enter new provincial capital. Either liked or disliked, we still have to put it into data such as Mamuju in West Sulawesi, Manokwari in West Irian Jaya and Tanjung Pinang. So there are some new capital cities to be included into data in order to give a representative picture of the new provinces concerned," he said.

In the meantime, BPS Deputy Chief for Economic Statistics Pietojo said BPS will also add the number of items in new inflation calculations.

"Of 700 items included in the current calculations, the number may reach thousands because we want the details for example on lubricants. That lubricant will be based on their types such as a top one and ordinary one," he said.

However, the category of the products will be matched with the results of the planned survey. (*)
