BPS Strengthens Business Database to Support Papua Highlands Economy

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Jayawijaya Regency is strengthening the implementation of the 2026 economic census in three regencies of the Papua Highlands to provide accurate and comprehensive baseline data on all business and economic activities. Head of BPS Jayawijaya, Arther L Purmiasa, stated in Wamena on Thursday that the economic census will be conducted from June to August 2026 across Indonesia, with the Jayawijaya BPS office specifically covering Jayawijaya, Yalimo, and Central Mamberamo Regencies. “To carry out the economic census in Jayawijaya, Yalimo, and Central Mamberamo Regencies, we are deploying 421 field officers who have already commenced their work, divided among each regency,” he said. According to him, the 2026 economic census data collection aims to obtain the economic structure, an economic map, and information on large, medium, and small enterprises. “The goal of this activity is to obtain a better economic map for the future, both across Indonesia and in the Papua Highlands region, as part of the long-term plan towards Golden Indonesia 2045,” he stated. He explained that the economic census in other parts of the Papua Highlands, such as Nduga, Lanny Jaya, Tolikara, Yahukimo, and Pegunungan Bintang Regencies, will involve the respective BPS work units in those areas. “The economic census is also being conducted throughout the Papua Highlands region by each local BPS work unit; only we at BPS Jayawijaya are handling Yalimo and Central Mamberamo Regencies,” he said. He added that during field data collection, many officers are rejected by residents for various reasons, presenting a significant challenge to the success of this national activity. “We hope the public in the three regencies—Jayawijaya, Yalimo, and Central Mamberamo—can recognise the economic census officers by their attire and official assignment letters so that this data collection can proceed smoothly and within the given timeframe,” he said.
