BPS States Transportation Contributes Largest to Monthly Inflation in April 2026
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Ateng Hartono, stated that monthly inflation in April 2026 reached 0.13 per cent (month-to-month/mtm), with the Transportation Expenditure Group as the largest contributor.
He explained that this expenditure group experienced 0.99 per cent mtm inflation, contributing 0.12 per cent to the total monthly inflation in April 2026.
“The dominant commodities driving inflation in the Transportation Group are air transport fares, contributing 0.11 per cent to inflation, as well as petrol with a 0.02 per cent contribution,” said Ateng Hartono in Jakarta on Monday.
His office recorded that air transport fares saw a monthly inflation of 15.25 per cent mtm, while petrol experienced 0.34 per cent mtm monthly inflation.
He stated that this inflation occurred alongside increases in aviation fuel prices and certain non-subsidised fuel types.
However, intercity transport fares actually experienced monthly deflation of 10.01 per cent mtm in April 2026, with a deflation contribution of 0.03 per cent.
Furthermore, Ateng highlighted another major contributing expenditure group to last month’s inflation: the Food and Beverage Provision/Restaurant Group, which saw 0.69 per cent mtm inflation with a 0.07 per cent monthly inflation contribution.
Meanwhile, other commodities with the largest monthly inflation contributions in April 2026 include cooking oil (0.05 per cent), tomatoes (0.03 per cent), rice (0.02 per cent), and rice with side dishes (0.02 per cent).
Not only inflation, Ateng said that several expenditure groups and commodities also experienced monthly deflation in April 2026.
He stated that the Personal Care and Other Services Expenditure Group experienced monthly deflation of 0.99 per cent mtm with a 0.07 per cent deflation contribution, while the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Expenditure Group saw 0.20 per cent mtm monthly deflation with a 0.06 per cent deflation contribution.
On the commodity side, he mentioned several commodities contributing to monthly deflation in Indonesia’s economy in April 2026, including broiler chicken meat with a 0.11 per cent deflation contribution and gold jewellery with a 0.09 per cent deflation contribution.
“Then, bird’s eye chillies and broiler chicken eggs with deflation contributions of 0.06 per cent and 0.04 per cent respectively,” Ateng added.
BPS recorded that monthly inflation in April 2026 was based on the rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 110.95 in March 2026 to 111.09 in April 2026.
Nevertheless, the April 2026 monthly inflation rate of 0.13 per cent mtm remains lower than the March 2026 monthly inflation rate of 0.41 per cent mtm.
