Indonesia’s Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) has reported that rice harvest area in January 2026 achieved 0.57 million hectares, representing a 35.72 per cent increase compared to January 2025’s 0.42 million hectares. The expansion in harvest area was accompanied by a rise in rice production in January 2026, which reached 3.04 million tonnes of dried grain equivalent (GKG), up 38.69 per cent year-on-year.

BPS also released projections for rice harvest potential over the next three months. For the February-April 2026 period, BPS estimates rice harvest area will reach 3.92 million hectares, a decline of 0.16 million hectares or approximately 3.87 per cent lower than the corresponding period of the previous year.

Rice production potential for February-April 2026 is estimated to reach 21.24 million tonnes GKG, a 4.04 per cent decrease compared to the previous year. Rice production during the same period is projected to decline 4.02 per cent to 12.23 million tonnes.

“The projected harvest area figures may change according to current field observations such as pest attacks, flooding, drought, actual harvest timing, and other factors,” explained Ateng Hartono, Deputy for Statistics of Distribution and Services at BPS, on Monday (2/3).

Separately, maize harvest area in January 2026 reached 0.24 million hectares, up approximately 11.17 per cent compared to January 2025. Maize production in January 2026 achieved 1.38 million tonnes of dried shelled maize at 14 per cent moisture content, representing an 11.09 per cent increase year-on-year.

BPS noted that 2025 rice production surged 13.29 per cent to 60.21 million tonnes GKG, setting the stage for a robust early 2026 harvest across Indonesia’s key production regions.
