Jakarta — The Indonesian Bureau of Statistics (BPS) said rice prices in 111 regencies and cities rose. BPS chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said the national average price for rice stood at Rp 15,324 per kilogram. ‘Rice, the national average is Rp 15,324 per kilogram; 111 regencies and cities have seen increases in rice prices,’ Amalia told a meeting on Coordinating Inflation Control at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday (18 May 2026).

She went on to explain the causes of the price hikes in several areas. In some regions, rice inflation rose by 6.54 per cent month-on-month in the second week of May. She said the shortage was caused by Kapuas Regency not yet entering the harvest season, which has left stocks in the market rather limited. ‘This phenomenon occurs because stocks are thinning, and harvesting has not yet started,’ she said. ‘Because rice is not yet harvested, the goods available in the market are relatively scarce,’ she added.

BPS estimates that rice stocks in Kapuas will rise again in June, referring to the agency’s Area Survey Framework (KSA). ‘Stock is likely to rise in June,’ she added. In Palangkaraya, rice supply was constrained due to limited local production, including beras mayang hanyar, karang dukuh, and pangkuh hybrid varieties, not yet widely harvested. In Tanah Laut, rice prices rose notably following higher paddy prices, with the annual paddy variety already well past the harvest season while Ciherang paddy had begun harvesting but has not yet had a significant impact on the market. ‘Supply is not abundant from suppliers,’ Amalia noted.
