BPS Reports 0.14 Percent Deflation in July 2026 Driven by Food, Beverages, and Tobacco

Jakarta – Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, reported that a month-to-month (mtm) deflation of 0.14 percent occurred in July 2026. He explained that the expenditure group causing this deflation included food, beverages, and tobacco, which experienced a deflation of 0.89 percent and contributed 0.26 percent to the overall deflation. “Deflation occurred in July 2026 at 0.14 percent on a monthly basis,” Ateng said during a press conference at the BPS office in Jakarta on Wednesday, 3 August 2026. “The expenditure group driving deflation was primarily food, beverages, and tobacco, with a deflation of 0.89 percent, contributing 0.26 percent to the deflation,” he stated. Meanwhile, on an annual basis (year-on-year), Ateng reported that inflation stood at 2.88 percent. However, on a calendar year basis (year-to-date), inflation was recorded at 1.65 percent. He explained that the commodities driving deflation included shallots, which contributed 0.11 percent to deflation, and red chillies and cayenne peppers, each contributing 0.06 percent. Furthermore, purebred chicken eggs and tomatoes contributed 0.03 percent to deflation, while oranges contributed 0.02 percent. Ateng added that besides the food, beverages, and tobacco group, another driver of deflation came from the personal care and other services group, which experienced a deflation of 0.89 percent and contributed 0.06 percent to the overall deflation. “Deflation in the personal care and other services group was mainly driven by a 3.58 percent deflation in gold jewellery, which contributed 0.08 percent to the deflation,” he said.
