Jakarta (ANTARA) - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) has recorded that rice prices, including both medium and premium categories, experienced a simultaneous increase in August 2026.

Ateng Hartono, Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, stated in Jakarta on Tuesday that the average price of rice at the milling, wholesale, and retail levels has seen an upward trend.

On average, rice prices at the milling level rose by 1.32 per cent month-to-month (mtm) and 5.52 per cent year-on-year (yoy).

When broken down by quality at the milling level, premium rice prices rose by 1.22 per cent (mtm) and 10.07 per cent (yoy), while medium rice prices increased by 1.48 per cent (mtm) and 4.03 per cent (yoy).

“Therefore, on a year-on-year basis, the increase for premium rice is higher compared to medium rice,” said Ateng.

Notably, the upward price trend for both medium and premium rice has been ongoing since February 2026.

Regarding rice price developments at the wholesale and retail levels in August 2026, the wholesale level experienced inflation of 0.80 per cent (mtm) and 4.28 per cent (yoy). Meanwhile, at the retail level, inflation stood at 0.42 per cent (mtm) and 2.77 per cent (yoy).

“For your information, the rice prices we are reporting are average prices that cover various qualities and include all regions across Indonesia,” Ateng added.

Furthermore, the national Farmer Terms of Trade (NTP) stood at 129.19 in August 2026, an increase of 1.05 per cent compared to July 2026.

The increase in NTP occurred because the index of prices received by farmers (It) rose by 1.14 per cent to 165.66, which was higher than the increase in the index of prices paid by farmers (Ib) of 0.09 per cent to 128.24.

The commodities that predominantly influenced the increase in the national price index received by farmers were unhusked rice (gabah), palm oil, rubber, and broiler chicken.

Meanwhile, the commodities affecting the price index paid by farmers included broiler chicken, rice, long beans, and green beans.
