BPS Records Pickup Imports Reaching Rp 975.8 Billion, Dominated by India and Thailand

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that throughout January-February 2026, imports of commercial vehicles in the form of pickup trucks or rigid trucks reached 57.4 million US dollars, equivalent to Rp 975.8 billion (exchange rate of Rp 17,000 per US dollar).

BPS Deputy for Social Statistics Ateng Hartono stated that the pickup imports originated from two countries, namely India and Thailand.

“Pickup cars, pickup trucks, and also their completely built-up units, in January-February amounted to 57.4 million US dollars, with the countries of origin being India and Thailand,” said Ateng in a BPS release at the BPS Head Office, Wednesday (1/4/2026).

Ateng mentioned that the commodity in question falls under HS code 8704.21.26, which refers to motor vehicles for the transport of goods (pickups) in complete or completely built-up (CBU) condition.

BPS, he said, does not have the authority to determine the final destination of the thousands of vehicles entering the country.

He stated that the data released by BPS is technical in nature regarding foreign trade traffic.

Previously, controversy arose when PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara (Agrinas) planned to import 105,000 pickup car units from India for the operations of the Red and White Village/Urban Ward Cooperatives (KDKMP).

Agrinas President Director Joao Angelo De Sousa Mota emphasised that his company had invited almost all local producers to participate in the procurement process.

However, in this large-scale project, Agrinas requires more competitive prices.

Through an import scheme from India for 4x4 pickup needs and trucks, Agrinas claims potential budget efficiency of up to Rp 46.5 trillion.

“We carry out procurement procedurally in accordance with procurement standards, starting from clarification, qualification, negotiation, and at the end, there must be an agreement,” said Joao in a press conference in Jakarta, Tuesday (24/2/2026).

The import plan drew controversy. Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad asked the government to postpone the plan.

“So the plan to import 105,000 pickup cars from India, I have already conveyed a message to the government to postpone that plan for now, considering the president is still abroad,” he said when met at the DPR RI Building, Monday (23/2/2026).
