BPS records deflation in chicken meat to chillies following Eid
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Ateng Hartono, revealed that several food commodities, such as chicken meat to chillies, experienced deflation following the Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 1447 H period in March 2026.
He stated that the deflation in various commodities within the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Expenditure Group helped curb the monthly inflation rate in April 2026. The monthly inflation in April 2026 was recorded at 0.13 per cent month-to-month (mtm).
“This group (Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Expenditure Group) experienced deflation of 0.20 per cent (mtm) with a deflation contribution of 0.06 per cent,” said Ateng Hartono in Jakarta on Monday.
He explained that the main contributors to the deflation from the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Expenditure Group were broiler chicken meat, cayenne chillies, broiler chicken eggs, and red chillies.
They recorded that the broiler chicken meat commodity experienced deflation of 6.20 per cent mtm in April 2026, after previously experiencing inflation of 3.30 per cent mtm in March 2026.
Meanwhile, the cayenne chillies commodity experienced deflation of 14.98 per cent mtm, broiler chicken eggs deflation of 4.29 per cent mtm, and red chillies deflation of 5.32 per cent mtm.
Deflation in food commodities following the celebration of National Major Religious Holidays is historically a common occurrence, at least in the last three years based on BPS data.
Ateng stated that this deflation occurred in line with demand levels returning to normal after the Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
“Well, the same applies to this year’s post-Eid moment, which coincides with April 2026,” he said.
He conveyed that this food price deflation also drove deflation in the Volatile Component by 0.88 per cent mtm with a deflation contribution of 0.15 per cent.
Meanwhile, the other two components, namely the Core Component and the Administered Price Component, experienced monthly inflation in April 2026.
Ateng stated that the Core Component experienced inflation of 0.23 per cent mtm with an inflation contribution of 0.15 per cent.
The commodities that dominantly contributed to inflation in that component, he continued, were cooking oil, rice with side dishes, mobile phones, fried chicken, laptops/notebooks, and granulated sugar.
The Administered Price Component experienced inflation of 0.69 per cent with an inflation contribution of 0.13 per cent.
“The commodities that dominantly contributed to inflation in the Administered Price Component are air transport fares, petrol, household fuel, and machine-rolled clove cigarettes or SKM,” said Ateng.
