BPS Records Decline in Hotel Occupancy Rates in East Java to 52.72 Per Cent

The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded that the Room Occupancy Rate (TPK) for star-rated hotels in East Java reached 52.72% in July 2026. This figure represents a decrease of 1.51 percentage points compared to June 2026, which had reached 54.23%.

The Acting Head of BPS East Java, Herum Fajarwati, explained that the TPK is a primary indicator reflecting the productivity of the accommodation services industry. The decline in July 20lar 2026 was driven by falling occupancy in 3-star and 4-star hotel classes.

“The decrease in TPK in July 2026 was influenced by declines in the 3-star and 4-star hotel classes, which fell by 2.75 and 2.37 percentage points, respectively,” Herum stated during a press conference in Surabaya on Monday (1/9).

Technically, the TPK figure of 52.72% indicates that for every 100 available rooms in star-rated hotels across East Java, an average of 52 to 53 rooms are sold each night. Despite the general decline, certain hotel classes actually recorded increases, namely 1-star hotels (up 6.75 points), 2-star hotels (up 0.47 points), and 5-star hotels (up 2.83 points).

A similar trend occurred in the non-star accommodation sector. The TPK for non-star hotels in July 2026 was recorded at 23.85%, a decrease of 2.08 points compared to the June 2026 achievement of 25.93%.

By region, Tulungagung Regency recorded the highest star-rated hotel TPK in East Java at 68.91%, followed by Mojokerto City (65.01%) and Gresik Regency (61.55%). Conversely, the lowest TPK rates were found in Trenggalek Regency (16.51%), Blitar City (33.64%), and Pasuruan Regency (35.64%).

Herum added that high occupancy in certain areas is influenced by strategic locations near business centres, tourist destinations, and transport facilities. Additionally, large-scale activities such as conferences and festivals, alongside effective digital promotions, serve as key factors in attracting guests.
