BPS Records 31,339 International Tourists Visiting East Java via Juanda Airport in March
Surabaya, East Java - The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) stated that 31,339 international tourists visited East Java Province in April 2026 via Juanda Airport, marking a 26.37 per cent increase compared to the 24,800 visits recorded in April 2025. “This condition has also improved compared to March 2026, which saw 21,068 visits,” said the Acting Head of BPS East Java, Herum Fajarwati, during a press conference in Surabaya on Tuesday.
The largest group of international visitors were Chinese nationals, with 11,427 visits, representing 36.46 per cent of the total international arrivals through Juanda. This was followed by Malaysian nationals with 6,363 visits, and Singaporean nationals with 2,052 visits.
Meanwhile, domestic tourist trips from East Java in April 2026 were recorded at 14.73 million trips, a decrease of 23.93 per cent compared to March 2026. Based on origin, Surabaya City recorded the highest number of domestic tourist trips at 2.27 million, or approximately 15.42 per cent of the total domestic trips from East Java.
Domestic tourist trips in April 2026 declined across all regencies and cities in East Java compared to the previous year, with Bangkalan Regency experiencing a significant decrease of 53.35 per cent.
The occupancy rate (TPK) for star-rated hotels in East Java in April 2026 was recorded at 46.80 per cent, an increase of 3.38 percentage points compared to March 2026, which stood at 43.42 per cent. “The increase in occupancy in April 2026 was driven by growth across all star-rated hotel classes,” Herum noted. The increases were observed in 1-star hotels by 1.21, 2-star by 1.97, 3-star by 6.21, 4-star by 2.12, and 5-star by 0.01. Occupancy for non-star hotels and other accommodations rose to 22.59 per cent, up 3.12 percentage points from March’s 19.47 per cent.
Three regencies/cities recorded the highest star-rated hotel occupancy rates: Gresik Regency (73.88 per cent), Mojokerto City (70.36 per cent), and Tulungagung Regency (58.85 per cent). Conversely, Probolinggo Regency, Trenggalek Regency, and Pasuruan Regency recorded the lowest occupancy rates at 9.10 per cent, 16.10 per cent, and 23.18 per cent, respectively.
Herum stated that high hotel occupancy in certain areas is influenced by several key factors, including strategic locations near business centres, tourist destinations, or transport facilities such as airports and stations. Additionally, large-scale events such as conferences, festivals, or holiday seasons contribute to increased room demand, alongside effective digital promotions and collaborations with travel agents or online booking applications.
