The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded that the Farmers’ Terms of Trade (NTP) in East Java rose by 3.32 per cent in May 2026 compared to April 2026, increasing from 116.46 to 120.33. This was due to the farmer price receiving index (It) rising by 3.76 per cent, while the farmer paying index (Ib) increased by 0.43 per cent.

“This NTP is one of the indicators used to assess the level of purchasing power of farmers in rural areas,” said the Acting Head of BPS East Java, Herum Fajarwati, during a press conference in Surabaya, East Java, on Tuesday.

Herum noted that looking at the development of each sub-sector in May 2026, three agricultural sub-sectors experienced an increase in NTP, while two others experienced a decline. The Food Crop, Horticulture, and Livestock sub-sectors saw increases of 2.67 per cent, 11.77 per cent, and 0.84 per cent (month-to-month) respectively. Conversely, the Smallholder Plantation and Fisheries sub-sectors experienced declines of 1.05 per cent and 1.08 per cent.

“The Smallholder Plantation sub-sector experienced the deepest decline in the receiving index (It) at 0.82 per cent, followed by the Fisheries sub-sector, which fell by 0.75 per cent,” Herum stated.

The ten main commodities that contributed most significantly to the increase in the price index received by farmers in May 2026 were unhusked rice, bird’s eye chilli, shallots, beef cattle, maize, goats, red chilli, dairy cattle, cassava, and cabbage. Meanwhile, the ten main commodities that contributed most to the decline in the price index received by farmers were broiler eggs, coffee, tomatoes, broiler chickens, oranges, milkfish, quail eggs, potatoes, watermelon, and peanuts.
