BPS records 1.38 million foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia in May 2026

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the number of foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia in May 2026 reached 1.38 million visits, an increase of 5.83 per cent compared to the same period the previous year (year-on-year/yoy). Cumulatively, the number of foreign tourist arrivals from January to May 2026 reached 6.07 million visits, or grew by 7.68 per cent compared to the same period last year. Based on country of origin, the majority of foreign tourist arrivals in May 2026 came from Malaysia with 298.21 thousand visits, or 21.58 per cent of the total. This was followed by tourists from Australia with 155.03 thousand visits, or 11.22 per cent, and Singapore with 136.74 thousand visits, or 9.89 per cent. In addition to recording an increase in foreign tourist arrivals, BPS also reported that domestic tourist movement grew. In May 2026, the number of domestic tourist trips reached 106.16 million, an increase of 8.69 per cent compared to May 2025. Cumulatively, domestic tourist trips from January to May 2026 were recorded at 523.22 million, a rise of 2.86 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. In terms of passenger transport, rail transport recorded the highest number of departures in May 2026, reaching 46.96 million passengers, an annual increase of 4.17 per cent. Increases also occurred in domestic sea transport, which carried 2.66 million passengers, up 6.45 per cent, and ferry transport with 4.51 million passengers, up 16.66 per cent. On the other hand, the number of domestic air transport passengers fell 9.22 per cent to 4.11 million passengers. Meanwhile, the number of international air transport passengers was recorded at 1.65 million, a decline of 6.41 per cent compared to May 2025. For freight transport, BPS recorded that the volume of goods transported via domestic sea transport increased by 2.76 per cent year-on-year to 42.69 million tonnes in May 2026.
