Jayapura, Papua — The Central Statistics Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik, BPS) of Papua Province has recorded Australia as Papua’s primary export destination in January 2026, accounting for 71.17 per cent of the total export value.

The Head of BPS Papua, Adriana Helena Carolina, stated in Jayapura on Monday that Papua’s export value to Australia in January 2026 was recorded at USD 3,083.48 thousand.

“Besides Australia, the two largest alternative export destinations are New Zealand at USD 688.76 thousand, or 15.90 per cent, and Papua New Guinea at USD 363.26 thousand, or 8.39 per cent,” she said.

According to Adriana, overall exports to the six primary destinations in January 2026 were recorded at USD 4,135.56 thousand, a decline of 28.98 per cent compared to December 2025, which reached USD 5,823.26 thousand.

However, Papua’s exports to the six primary destinations in January 2026 increased by 24.70 per cent compared to the same period in the previous year, which stood at USD 3,316.49 thousand.

Meanwhile, Papua’s total export value in January 2026 was USD 4,332.27 thousand, or down 30.69 per cent compared to December 2025, which was recorded at USD 6,250.77 thousand.

“This decline was influenced by the reduced value of exports in several key commodities, although on an annual basis it still shows a positive trend in some destination countries,” she said.

She added that based on commodity type, Papua’s exports in January 2026 were dominated by non-mineral commodities at 99.87 per cent, whilst mineral commodities accounted for only 0.13 per cent of total exports.

“Non-mineral exports during that period consisted of timber and timber products (HS44) valued at USD 3,955.56 thousand and other non-mineral exports at USD 371.20 thousand. Meanwhile, mineral commodity exports were recorded at USD 5.50 thousand,” she said.
