BPS: North Maluku and Central Kalimantan Record Highest Annual Inflation in August
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that North Maluku and Central Kalimantan were the regions experiencing the highest annual inflation in August 2026, at 5.28 per cent (year-on-year/yoy) and 4.96 per cent (yoy) respectively.
“On an annual basis, all provinces experienced inflation. The highest inflation occurred in North Maluku Province, at 5.28 per cent,” said Ateng Hartono, Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, in Jakarta on Tuesday.
In addition to these two regions, other areas experiencing high inflation in August included Aceh (4.86 per cent yoy), North Sulawesi (3.99 per cent yoy), and West Nusa Tenggara (4.03 per cent yoy).
Meanwhile, the lowest inflation was recorded in North Kalimantan at 2.17 per cent (yoy), followed by South Papua (2.56 per cent yoy), East Nusa Tenggara (2.59 per cent yoy), South Sumatra (2.60 per cent yoy), and DKI Jakarta (2.71 per cent yoy).
In general, he stated that annual inflation was triggered by three expenditure groups.
First, the food, beverages, and tobacco group experienced inflation of 3.86 per cent, contributing 1.13 per cent to general inflation. Commodities with the largest inflationary contribution in this group included broiler chicken, fresh fish, cooking oil, rice, machine-rolled clove cigarettes (SKM), bird’s eye chilli, beef, hand-rolled clove cigarettes (SKT), machine-rolled white cigarettes (SPM), and red chilli.
Second, the personal care and other services expenditure group experienced inflation of 9.25 per cent, with an inflationary contribution of 0.63 per cent. Inflation in this group was primarily driven by gold jewellery.
Third, the transportation expenditure group experienced inflation of 4.79 per cent, with a contribution of 0.58 per cent. Driving commodities in this group included petrol, airfares, lubricants or engine oil, motorcycles, and cars.
Regarding components, all components experienced annual inflation.
Core inflation experienced annual inflation of 2.92 per cent, with the largest contribution being 1.87 per cent. Dominant commodities in the core component contributing to inflation included gold jewellery, cooking oil, rice with side dishes, mobile phones, lubricants or engine oil, and laptops or notebooks.
Administered prices experienced inflation of 3.32 per cent, with a contribution of 0.65 per cent. Driving commodities included petrol, airfares, machine-rolled clove cigarettes (SKM), and household fuel.
Meanwhile, volatile food components experienced annual inflation of 4.06 per cent, with a contribution of 0.67 per cent. The dominant commodities contributing to this component were broiler chicken, rice, bird’s eye chilli, beef, and red chilli.
