The Central Agency of Statistics (BPS) reported that in May 2026, inflation rose by 0.28 per cent month-on-month, which is higher than the inflation recorded in April 2026 at 0.13 per cent. The increase in inflation was triggered by rising food prices, such as red chillies and cooking oil, as well as increases in the price of petrol and fuel.

Pudji Ismartini, the Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, stated that in May, the consumer price index rose to 111.40 from 111.09 in April 2026. The expenditure group contributing the largest monthly inflation was food, beverages, and tobacco, with inflation at 0.39 per cent, contributing 0.12 per cent to the overall inflation rate, she said during a press conference at the BPS office, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.

The dominant commodities driving inflation in the food, beverages, and tobacco group were red chillies, cooking oil, shallots, tomatoes, and rice. Additionally, inflation was triggered by the rising price of household fuel. Furthermore, Pudji explained that inflation was also caused by the increase in petrol prices and air transport fares, each contributing 0.02 per cent to inflation.

In terms of components, the inflation rate across all components experienced an increase. Core inflation rose by 0.22 per cent, driven by the rising prices of cooking oil, mobile phones, laptops or notebooks, lubricants or engine oil, rice with side dishes, and maintenance or servicing.

Government-regulated price components experienced inflation of 0.52 per cent, with contributing commodities including household fuel, petrol, air transport fares, machine-rolled clove cigarettes, and diesel. Meanwhile, volatile price components experienced inflation of 0.22 per cent, with commodities contributing to this include red chillies, shallots, tomatoes, rice, and mustard greens.

The Central Agency of Statistics noted that on a year-on-year basis, inflation stood at 3.08 per cent as of May 2026. Meanwhile, compared to the beginning of the calendar year, or year-to-date, inflation has reached 1.35 per cent.
