BPS Klungkung Delays Beautiful Village Programme to Nusa Penida, Here's the Reason
The Beautiful Statistics Village (Desa Cantik) programme has not yet reached a single village in Nusa Penida sub-district since its launch in 2021. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Klungkung is only targeting entry into that island area in 2027, with the reason being a focus on building prototypes on the mainland first.
“Actually, there are no obstacles in Nusa Penida. But this Beautiful Village is, I think, going to be a prototype for the future. Because it’s a prototype, I’m trying to nurture the ones nearby first. To maximise all our manpower,” said Head of BPS Klungkung Anak Agung Gede Dirga Kardita to detikBali on Wednesday (22/4/2026).
Dirga explained that the Beautiful Village programme aims to nurture villages so they can manage and present data independently. That way, Beautiful Village agents can support data needs for development planning.
“Because it’s a prototype, the success here will determine the future. If this succeeds, I believe Nusa Penida will be even more enthusiastic and successful,” he clarified.
In addition to focusing on the prototype, BPS Klungkung is still calculating the resource needs for implementing the programme in Nusa Penida. The difficult-to-access terrain and limited manpower are considerations.
Nevertheless, Dirga emphasised that distance is not the main reason. His side wants to ensure that the pilot villages built this year are truly successful before expansion.
“Slowly but surely. I will make this the best prototype. This will be our foundation for the future. I will show it. If this is good, we will tackle Nusa,” he explained.
Dirga also reaffirmed his commitment to the Regent of Klungkung to start working on Beautiful Villages in Nusa Penida in 2027.
“As per my promise to the Regent. In 2027, I will go to Nusa. How can I ask Nusa to be good when I haven’t even realised it on the mainland,” he asserted.
In 2026, BPS Klungkung has designated three villages as Beautiful Villages, namely Besan Village in Dawan sub-district, as well as Negari Village and Timuhun Village in Banjarangkan sub-district.
At the same location, Klungkung Regent I Made Satria hopes the Beautiful Village programme can reach all villages in the four sub-districts in his region.
“This data is very important for the region. How to determine development policies. If the data is not good, of course our policies will not be on target. Therefore, all villages in this area must have the best data. So in Nusa Penida, next year, I propose to BPS Klungkung to continue there,” said Satria.
