BPS: Jet Fuel and Food Prices Drive 0.02% Inflation in East Java in April
Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded 0.02% inflation in East Java in April 2026 compared to March 2026 (month-to-month/mtm), due to rising prices of avtur and food items such as raw tofu, tempeh, rice, tomatoes, and rice with side dishes.
“In April, there were various events such as surges in energy prices and global commodity dynamics that triggered inflation in East Java,” said Intermediate Expert Statistician of BPS East Java, Debora Sulistya Rini, during a press conference in Surabaya, East Java, on Monday.
Debora stated that last month’s inflation in East Java was driven by several factors, including price increases in non-subsidised fuels such as Pertamax Turbo, Dexlite, and Pertamina Dex, as well as a surge in avtur prices due to rising global oil prices, which spurred increases in transportation costs, airfares, and logistics.
Additionally, the weakening rupiah value and global supply disruptions pushed up prices of imported raw materials such as soybeans, plastic raw materials, and electronic components (chipsets), thereby impacting prices of processed food products, packaging, and electronic goods.
Furthermore, global commodity price dynamics, namely the rise in crude palm oil (CPO) prices due to demand for biodiesel needs and potential El Niño risks, also caused price increases in several commodities such as cooking oil.
In detail, air transport experienced 18.38% inflation with a 0.23% contribution, cooking oil 4.12% inflation with a 0.05% contribution, rice with side dishes 1.39% inflation with a 0.03% contribution, laptops/notebooks 3.15% inflation with a 0.03% contribution, and tomatoes 11.31% inflation with a 0.02% contribution.
Next, raw tofu experienced 2.54% inflation with a 0.02% contribution, mobile phones 1.63% inflation with a 0.01% contribution, tempeh 2.26% inflation with a 0.01% contribution, rice 0.28% inflation with a 0.01% contribution, and petrol 0.25% inflation with a 0.01% contribution.
On the other hand, several commodities experienced deflation, such as broiler chicken meat by 10.45%, bird’s eye chillies by 27.36%, gold jewellery by 4.65%, and broiler eggs by 7.85%, due to price normalisation after Ramadan.
“After experiencing increases during the Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr period due to high demand, prices of several food items began to show a downward trend and returned to more stable levels,” said Debora.
With the occurrence of inflation in April, the year-on-year (yoy) inflation for April 2026 compared to April 2025 was recorded at 2.85%, while calendar year inflation, i.e., April 2026 compared to December 2025, was 1.15%.
Of the 11 regencies/cities in East Java, two areas experienced inflation: Surabaya at 0.37% and Malang City at 0.05%, while the other nine experienced deflation, with the deepest in Probolinggo City at 0.65%.
Meanwhile, other areas included Jember with deflation of 0.44%, Gresik 0.4%, Sumenep 0.4%, Bojonegoro 0.35%, Banyuwangi 0.28%, Tulungagung 0.18%, Kediri 0.12%, and Madiun 0.02%.
