BPS Indonesia and India's MOSPI Sign Statistical Cooperation Agreement at BRICS Meeting
The heads of the national statistical offices of Indonesia and India have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and modernising statistical systems. The signing took place during a bilateral meeting between BPS Chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti and India’s Secretary General of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Saurabh Garg, on the sidelines of the Meeting of Heads of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of BRICS countries in Lucknow, India. Amalia’s active participation in the forum underscores Indonesia’s role in the international statistical community. The meeting served as a strategic platform for NSO leaders from BRICS nations to enhance collaboration in addressing increasingly complex global dynamics and the growing need for high-quality, reliable, timely, and relevant official statistics for policy formulation.
The Letter of Intent (LOI) signed by the two leaders covers the development of human resource capacity, the exchange of methodologies and best practices, the digital transformation of statistics, joint training programmes, and other forms of technical collaboration to strengthen both countries’ statistical systems. Amalia stated that the strengthened cooperation with India’s NSO is also an implementation of the Indonesian President’s directive to enhance bilateral relations following the state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Indonesia in early July.
Specifically, BPS and MOSPI plan to collaborate on the utilisation of artificial intelligence for statistical dissemination and the development of digitalisation in statistical business processes. BPS operates a digital platform for data collection and quality checking called FASIH, while MOSPI has a similar platform named e-SIGMA. The two agencies will exchange experiences to modernise these digital platforms. Through closer cooperation with BRICS nations, BPS aims to expand its contribution to global statistical development while strengthening national capacity to provide quality, meaningful, and impactful data as a foundation for inclusive, sustainable, and competitive development in Indonesia.
