BPS: Foreign Tourist Visits to Bali Decline, Yet Hotel Occupancy Rises
Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Bali Province has recorded a year-on-year decline in foreign tourist visits to the Island of the Gods during the April 2026 period. However, while the number of international tourists shrank, the occupancy rate (TPK) of star-rated hotels in Bali actually increased.
According to data from BPS Bali Province, the number of international tourist visits to Bali in April 2026 reached 553,328. This figure represents a 6.41 per cent decrease compared to the same period last year.
On the other hand, the occupancy rate of star-rated hotels in Bali in April 2026 was recorded at 57.94 per cent, an increase of 0.71 points compared to April 2025.
“It is somewhat anomalous because international tourists have decreased. Amidst the decline in foreign tourists, the occupancy rate value managed to achieve an increase,” said the Head of BPS Bali Province, Agus Gede Hendrayana Hermawan, in Denpasar on Tuesday (2/6/2026).
Agus explained that the occupancy rate is not only influenced by the number of guests staying overnight, but is also affected by the number of rooms available for sale during a specific period.
He provided an example: if a hotel has 100 rooms and 50 rooms are sold, the occupancy rate reaches 50 per cent. However, if the number of available rooms increases to 200 and 80 rooms are sold, the occupancy rate actually drops to 40 per cent.
“So, it depends on the availability of rooms and the number of rooms sold. It is possible that this month, the number of available rooms is not as high as last month, while the number of rooms sold is higher than the previous month,” he added.
Agus noted that not all hotel rooms are always available at all times. Furthermore, he stated that the addition of new rooms entering the market can also affect the calculation of the occupancy rate.
