BPS forecasts Indonesia's rice production at 28.71 million tonnes up to September 2026
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) has predicted that rice production between January and September 2026 will reach 28.71 million tonnes, a slight increase of 0.01 per cent compared with the same period the previous year.
“Or an increase of 0.003 million tonnes,” said Ateng Hartono, Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, in the Official Statistics News Release (BRS) in Jakarta on Monday.
Ateng detailed that national rice production between January and September 2026 is estimated to reach 49.84 million tonnes of milled dry grain (GKG), relatively stable compared with the same period last year, with a rise of 0.01 per cent.
Based on the results of the Area Frame Survey in June 2026, the rice harvest area during the first nine months of this year is projected to reach 9.46 million hectares, an increase of 0.11 per cent compared with January–September 2025.
In June 2026, rice production is estimated to reach 4.29 million tonnes of GKG, up 7.02 per cent from 4.01 million tonnes of GKG in June last year.
The increase is in line with a rise in harvest area of 6.93 per cent to 0.84 million hectares.
However, potential production from July to September 2026 is estimated to decline by 0.90 per cent to 16.25 million tonnes of GKG.
The harvest area during that period is also projected to fall by 1.26 per cent to 3.15 million hectares.
After being converted into rice for public consumption, production in June 2026 is estimated to reach 2.47 million tonnes, up 6.90 per cent year on year. Meanwhile, rice production between July and September 2026 is projected at 9.36 million tonnes, down 0.88 per cent.
The potential harvest between July and September is mainly concentrated in Central Java, East Java, West Java, Banten, several regions of Sumatra, South Sulawesi, South Kalimantan, and West Nusa Tenggara.
These projections remain subject to change due to pest infestations, floods, drought, and shifts in farmers’ harvesting times.
