BPS: Domestic tourist trips rise 0.97 per cent in Q2 2026

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded that the number of domestic tourist trips from January to June 2026 reached 630.41 million, the highest for a second quarter since 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, stated that this achievement represents a 2.71 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, indicating that domestic tourism activity continues to show a positive trend.

“This achievement of domestic tourist visits from January to June 2026 is the highest since 2019,” he said during an online press briefing in Jakarta on Monday.

Ateng noted that in June 2026, BPS recorded 107.19 million domestic trips made by domestic tourists, a rise of 0.97 per cent compared to May 2026 and an increase of 1.98 per cent compared to the same month last year, June 2025.

On the other hand, trips by Indonesians abroad showed a different trend. BPS recorded that the number of outbound trips by national tourists in June 2026 reached 766.78 thousand, surging 39.32 per cent compared to the previous month and rising 5.39 per cent year-on-year.

According to Ateng, the monthly surge was primarily influenced by the return of Hajj pilgrims, which took place in June 2026.

“Generally, the monthly increase in outbound national tourists was partly caused by the return of Hajj pilgrims in June 2026,” he said.

Nevertheless, cumulatively from January to June 2026, the number of trips by Indonesians abroad was recorded at 4.46 million, a decline of 2.40 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The data indicates that throughout the first half of 2026, travel activity was still largely driven by domestic tourism, serving as a strong signal that demand for domestic destinations remains robust and is the main pillar supporting the recovery of the national tourism sector.
