JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of DKI Jakarta Province records that Jakarta’s population is currently dominated by the younger generation. Based on data from the 2025 Inter-Census Population Survey (SUPAS) by BPS DKI Jakarta, the Millennial and Generation Z groups form the largest portion of Jakarta’s total population of 10.72 million people. “From the 2025 demographic portrait of Jakarta, the Millennial generation reaches 24.82% and Gen Z 24.12%, and this dominates,” said Special Staff to the Governor of DKI Jakarta for Public Communication, Chico Hakim, in his official statement on Wednesday (6/5/2026). Chico stated that this condition indicates Jakarta is in the midst of a demographic bonus period. “The SUPAS 2025 provides a strong signal that Jakarta is at the peak of the demographic bonus,” he said. In the data, Jakarta’s population dependency ratio is recorded at 40.34. This figure is considered low and shows that the burden of the non-productive age group on the productive age group is still relatively light. Additionally, the total fertility rate (TFR) is recorded at 1.79 children per woman. This figure indicates a relatively controlled birth rate. Meanwhile, the prevalence of contraceptive use reaches 54.72%. From the health perspective, the infant mortality rate is at 9.26 per 1,000 live births, while the under-five mortality rate reaches 10.73 per 1,000 live births. Chico said that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has prepared various programmes to capitalise on this situation. One of them is through strengthening reproductive health and family planning programmes at health service facilities. On the other hand, the government is also promoting human resource development through vocational training, startup incubation, and strengthening the creative economy ecosystem targeting the younger generation. “Going forward, our focus is on empowering the younger generation, protecting vulnerable groups, and managing the population in a planned manner,” said Chico.
