BPS Assures 2026 Economic Census Not for Tax Purposes

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) has confirmed that the implementation of the 2026 Economic Census is not aimed at registering new taxpayers. BPS stressed that all information provided by the public is used solely for statistical purposes as a basis for formulating government policy. The affirmation was delivered by the Head of BPS RI, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, to address public concerns that the economic census is linked to tax collection. She made the statement after the launch of the 2026 Economic Census at the DKI Jakarta City Hall on Monday (13/7/2026). “So this census is for statistical purposes, not for taxation purposes. The public needs to know that. Once again, we will safeguard the confidentiality of individual and personal data,” said Widy. Widy added that the public need not worry about the security of their personal data. BPS has collaborated with the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN), Telkom, and PT Peruri to ensure that all census data is stored securely on servers. “We have also collaborated with BSSN, Telkom, and PT Peruri to maintain the security of the data that will be collected on the BPS server,” she said. In addition to direct interviews, BPS provides an option for residents who wish to fill out the questionnaire independently via an online link provided by census officers. “Later, respondents or DKI Jakarta residents can fill it in independently to ensure that only the person concerned knows the contents,” she said. Widy explained that the field data collection for the 2026 Economic Census takes place from 15 June to 31 August 2026. Officers will visit households and business actors. For the verification process, residents only need to prepare their ID card (KTP) and Family Card (KK). “Our officers will not photograph the KTP or KK. They only check and validate because we already have the database in the officer’s application,” she said. As of 13 July 2026, the progress of Economic Census data collection in DKI Jakarta was reported to have reached 45.17 percent. BPS hopes that public participation will continue to increase so that the resulting data is accurate and can serve as a basis for formulating targeted economic policies. Meanwhile, Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung urged residents not to hesitate to provide accurate data when visited by census officers. He assured the public that the confidentiality of respondent data is fully guaranteed by law and BPS. “Once again, I ask, as the Head of BPS has conveyed, that data confidentiality is guaranteed, so they should not hesitate to report and convey their data as it is about themselves and their families,” said Pramono.
