BPS Assures 2026 Economic Census Not for Tax Purposes
Statistics Indonesia (BPS) has confirmed that the 2026 Economic Census is not intended to identify prospective new taxpayers. BPS stressed that all information provided by the public will be used purely for statistical purposes as the basis for formulating government policy.
The assurance was delivered by BPS Chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti in response to concerns among some members of the public who believe the economic census is linked to tax collection. She made the remarks following the launch of the 2026 Economic Census at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (13/7/2026).
“So this census is for statistical purposes, not for taxation purposes. That is something the wider public perhaps needs to know. So once again, the secrecy of individual and personal data will be safeguarded by us,” said Amalia, who is familiarly known as Widy.
Widy added that the public need not worry about the security of their personal data. BPS has partnered with the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN), Telkom and PT Peruri to ensure all census data is stored securely on servers.
“We have also collaborated with BSSN, Telkom and PT Peruri to safeguard the security of the data that will be collected on BPS servers,” she said.
In addition to face-to-face interviews, BPS is providing an option for residents who wish to complete the questionnaire independently via an online link that will be provided by census officers.
“Respondents or residents of DKI Jakarta will be able to fill it in themselves, ensuring that only the person concerned knows what has been entered,” she said.
Widy explained that field data collection for the 2026 Economic Census runs from 15 June to 31 August 2026. Officers will visit both households and businesses.
For the verification process, residents only need to prepare their identity card (KTP) and family card (KK). “Our officers will not photograph the KTP or KK. They will only check and validate them, because we already have the database within the officers’ application,” she said.
As of 13 July 2026, the progress of Economic Census data collection in DKI Jakarta was reported to have reached 45.17 per cent. BPS hopes public participation will continue to increase so that the resulting data is accurate and can serve as the foundation for well-targeted economic policy-making.
Meanwhile, Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung urged Jakarta residents not to hesitate to provide truthful information when census officers visit. He assured the public that respondents’ data confidentiality is fully guaranteed by law and by BPS.
“Once again, I ask, as the Head of BPS said earlier, that data secrecy is guaranteed, so that people will not hesitate to report and convey data as it is about themselves and their families,” said Pramono.
