BPS Addresses Public Doubts, 5.12 Percent Economic Data Guaranteed Credible
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has responded to doubts from various parties regarding Indonesia’s economic growth data for the third quarter of 2025, which was recorded at 5.12 percent.
Director of Production Accounts at BPS, Puji Agus Kurniawan, emphasised that the released data constitutes official statistics compiled using internationally standard methodologies with a proven business process.
“We explained earlier how many data points are used to calculate GDP. So if, for example, external calculations or estimations are made, the variables certainly won’t be as numerous as those used by BPS,” Puji stated during a Journalists’ Workshop at the BPS office in Jakarta on Tuesday (21/4/2026).
This ensures that the resulting data maintains comparability across countries and upholds quality standards.
Puji explained that one of the main approaches to calculating GDP/regional gross domestic product is through the production side or business fields.
In this approach, there are 17 categories of economic sectors calculated in detail, ranging from agriculture, forestry, and fishing, mining and quarrying, manufacturing industry, to the services sector.
In addition to the production approach, BPS also employs the expenditure and income approaches to ensure data accuracy.
The expenditure approach covers various components, such as household consumption, non-profit institutions’ consumption, government spending, gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), changes in inventory, as well as exports and imports of goods and services.
Meanwhile, the income approach calculates GDP based on components such as compensation of employees, fixed capital consumption, operating surplus, and taxes less subsidies on production.
This simultaneously addresses public doubts and reaffirms that Indonesia’s economic growth data is compiled credibly and accountably.
Previously, BPS reported that Indonesia’s economy in the second quarter of 2025 grew by 5.12 percent year-on-year (yoy). This growth rate is higher than in the first quarter of 2025 or the second quarter of 2024.
Deputy for Balance and Statistical Analysis at BPS, Moh Edy Mahmud, stated that the economic growth figure was derived from gross domestic product (GDP) at current market prices (ADHB) of Rp 5,947 trillion and at constant prices (ADHK) of Rp 3,396.3 trillion.
The economic growth rate for the April-June 2025 period increased from the previous quarter.
The economic growth rate in Q1 2025 was recorded at only 4.87 percent yoy. Additionally, growth in Q2 2025 was also higher than the same period last year.
Economic growth in Q2 2024 reached 5.05 percent annually.
