BPPB Promotes Indonesian Language on the International Stage
Pangkalpinang (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Language Development and Cultivation Agency (BPPB) of the Republic of Indonesia is promoting the Indonesian language on the international stage, in line with its use as an official language in the General Assembly of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). “Currently, the Indonesian language is on par with international languages,” said BPPB Head Hafidz Muksin while attending the inauguration of the Bangka Belitung Language Office building in Pangkalpinang on Monday. He stated that UNESCO has designated Indonesian as an official language in its international forum sessions, and in 2025, the Indonesian Minister of Basic and Secondary Education will deliver a speech in Indonesian for the first time at an official international forum. “Currently, there are only 10 languages in the world, and Indonesian is one of them that is officially used in the UNESCO General Assembly,” he said. “As the Indonesian nation, this moment of support certainly makes us proud that the Indonesian language is now equivalent to the international languages designated by UNESCO,” he added. He further noted that as a culturally rich nation with 718 regional languages, the Language Office is also conducting activities to revitalise regional languages. “Regional languages, particularly in the Bangka Belitung Islands, must be revitalised to prevent extinction. Therefore, we encourage local governments to hold various regional language competitions at the elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels,” he said.
