BPOM Uncovers Circulation of Illegal Cosmetics on Digital Platforms
The rampant sale of cosmetics through digital platforms continues to be accompanied by the circulation of non-compliant products. Throughout the first six months of 2026, the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) discovered thousands of links selling illegal cosmetics, with the economic value of the findings reaching tens of billions of rupiah. These findings serve as a reminder for the public to be more discerning when selecting beauty products that have obtained marketing authorisation to ensure their safety.
BPOM revealed that the violations included products without marketing authorisation, cosmetics with exaggerated claims, and items containing hazardous substances or failing to meet safety standards. The agency uncovered 9,042 links promoting and selling illegal cosmetics across various digital platforms from January to June 2026. The economic value of the non-compliant cosmetic findings reached Rp35.8 billion, an increase of approximately tenfold compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. This discovery indicates that the circulation of illegal products in the online market remains high.
BPOM reminded consumers to always check the marketing authorisation number, packaging, labelling, and expiry date, as well as to ensure that products are purchased from trusted sellers.
