Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has followed up on 14 cosmetic products found to contain hazardous or prohibited ingredients during its monitoring period in the second quarter of 2026. BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar stated in Jakarta on Monday that of the 14 products, 11 were locally made under contract manufacturing, one was an imported product, and two were unlicensed. “The hazardous and prohibited ingredients in these products include retinoic acid, hydroquinone, mercury, red dye, clobetasol propionate, and mometasone furoate,” Taruna said. The 14 products are: AF AYUFASKIN.ID Night Cream Booster With DNA Salmon, AL-LATIF Henna Kutek Ravishing Red, FALLIN BEAUTY Bright & Glow Daily Sunscreen, FALLIN BEAUTY Bright & Glow Night Repair Cream, MALLVIRA SKIN Luxury White Body Serum, RNC WBEAUTY Bodylotion Whitening Booster 10x Niacinamide, SR SARASKIN COSMETIC Ultimate Whitening Night Cream, STK COSMETIC BY SARTIKA DEASY Night Cream, STK COSMETIC BY SARTIKA DEASY Premium Night Cream, STK COSMETIC BY SARTIKA DEASY Premium Face Toner, YANTIYNK BEAUTY Night Cream Whitening Acne, MARSHWILLOW Sugar Dust Eyeshadow Palette 803, CLARIDERM Astringent AHA + Licorice, and GLOWING BEAUTY SKINCARE BY GLOWING BEAUTY Glowing Night Treatment (in the GLOWING BEAUTY SKINCARE BY GLOWING BEAUTY package). Taruna explained that these ingredients can have health impacts. He cited mercury as causing skin discolouration with black spots (ochronosis), allergic reactions, skin irritation, headaches, diarrhoea, and vomiting. “Secondly, retinoic acid can cause dry skin, a burning sensation, and changes to the organs of the foetus in pregnant women; it can be teratogenic. And this retinoic acid can actually accelerate wrinkling,” he said. The BPOM Head also noted that mometasone furoate causes skin atrophy, while red dye K10 causes cancer, liver damage, and damage to the nervous system and brain. “The follow-up actions taken against these products include revoking their marketing authorisation numbers, issuing stern warnings including orders for recall and destruction, temporary suspension of activities, and market control of cosmetics containing prohibited or hazardous substances,” he stated. He also expressed appreciation to partners for the cross-sector cooperation established for the follow-up. Furthermore, he urged consumers to be smart in choosing products to protect themselves from the health risks of illegal products. “Always use the ‘Check Klik’ method. Check the packaging, check the label, ensure the distribution permit is in place, and also check the expiry date. Do not use cosmetics without a distribution permit, be wary of excessive claims, and report suspected circulation of illegal cosmetics containing hazardous substances,” he said.
