BPOM Finds Four Local Coffee Brands That Could Trigger Heart Attacks

The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has revealed findings concerning several local coffee brands that contain hazardous chemical substances. These products are typically promoted as coffee to boost male stamina, yet were uncovered during monitoring of the distribution of natural medicines (OBA). The chemical content in these coffees poses severe health risks as it can trigger various serious illnesses. The dangerous effects include kidney damage, heart disorders, liver damage, and even the risk of death for those who consume them. ‘Products promoted as food, even claimed to enhance virility, were found upon examination to contain sildenafil citrate,’ said BPOM chief Taruna Ikrar, quoted from the official BPOM website some time ago. Sildenafil citrate is an active substance in the category of prescription drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension. However, this ingredient is often misused as an additive in herbal remedies or stamina-boosting supplements. Adding this substance to health products is highly dangerous because it can trigger various side effects, such as vision and hearing impairment, as well as chest pain. Furthermore, its consumption also carries the risk of causing fatal conditions such as stroke, heart attack and death. The coffee brands found to contain the hazardous substance are: Kopi Macho, containing sildenafil citrate with fictitious marketing authorisation TR110828024; Kopi Jantan Gali-Gali, containing sildenafil citrate with fictitious marketing authorisation MD090910002236; Kopi Arjuna, containing sildenafil citrate; and Kopi Stamina Dewa Jantan, containing sildenafil citrate with fictitious marketing authorisation TR MD 182009124. Taruna Ikrar explained that the circulation of illegal and dangerous products continues with increasingly varied methods. He also noted that the methods used by perpetrators include marketing through online platforms, social media, and covert distribution channels that are difficult to trace. Such products are often claimed to be stamina-enhancing supplements, particularly for men. However, their contents conceal hidden dangers that are not disclosed to consumers.
