BPOM Finds 4 Local Coffee Brands Containing Heart Attack-Inducing Chemicals, Warns Public

Jakarta - The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has revealed shocking findings in its supervision of the distribution of natural medicines (OBA). BPOM stated that several local coffee brands contain dangerous substances. These coffees were promoted for male stamina.

The hazardous chemical content can potentially cause kidney damage, heart problems, liver damage, and even death to those who drink it.

“Products promoted as food, even claimed to enhance virility, were found upon inspection to contain sildenafil citrate,” said BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar, as quoted from the official BPOM website.

Sildenafil citrate is an active substance in prescription drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension, which is often illegally misused as a medicinal chemical (BKO) in herbal drinks or stamina products.

The addition of sildenafil citrate can cause side effects such as loss of vision and hearing, chest pain, dizziness, swelling (mouth, lips, and face), stroke, heart attack, and even death.

The following are the coffee brands found to contain the hazardous substance:

• Kopi Macho - Contains sildenafil citrate (fictitious distribution permit TR110828024)

• Kopi Jantan Gali-Gali - Contains sildenafil citrate (fictitious distribution permit MD090910002236)

• Kopi Arjuna - Contains sildenafil citrate

• Kopi Stamina Dewa Jantan - Contains sildenafil citrate (fictitious distribution permit TR MD 182009124)

Taruna Ikrar explained that the distribution of illegal and dangerous products continues with increasingly varied methods. He mentioned that the perpetrators’ modus operandi includes marketing through online platforms, social media, and covert distribution channels that are difficult to trace. Such products are often claimed to be stamina-enhancing supplements, particularly for men. However, their contents harbour hidden dangers that are not disclosed to consumers.
