The Jakarta Food and Drug Authority (BBPOM) has educated hundreds of Ancol residents in North Jakarta regarding the safe use of medicines and the proper methods for disposing of damaged and expired drugs.

The Head of BBPOM Jakarta, Jaffeta Pradeko Putra, stated that this education, conducted through the Communication, Information, and Education (KIE) programme, aims to increase public awareness regarding household medicine management.

“Many residents still store medicines that are no longer in use or dispose of them along with household waste without special treatment,” Jaffeta said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Friday.

He noted that such habits have the potential to pollute the environment and create opportunities for the misuse of damaged or expired medicines, including the circulation of illegal and counterfeit drugs.

Jaffently emphasised that the supervision of food and drugs requires public participation, including the correct disposal of medicines to prevent misuse and protect the environment.

Furthermore, the public is urged to apply the ‘Cek BEBAS’ method to food by ensuring that the appearance, smell, colour, and taste of products show no abnormalities before consumption.

Jaffeta also warned the public to avoid purchasing medicines from unverified sellers, including unauthorised online shops, as there is a risk of obtaining illegal, counterfeit, or damaged medicines caused by improper storage.

He further reminded that the use of potent drugs must follow a doctor’s prescription to prevent misuse, dangerous side effects, and antibiotic resistance.

“Drug supervision is not solely the responsibility of BPOM, but also requires the active participation of the community. Consume safe food and beverages, and always protect yourself and your peers from drug misuse in social circles,” said Jaffeta.
