BPOM Cracks Down on Circulation of Counterfeit Codrela and Trivam Fliege Drugs
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) is taking action regarding the circulation of two counterfeit medicines, branded as Codrela and Trivam Fliege, both of which fail to display marketing authorisation numbers on their packaging.
BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar stated in Jakarta on Wednesday that counterfeit medicines remain a serious threat to public health and safety. Fake drugs may contain incorrect compositions, excessive or insufficient amounts of ingredients, or may lack active substances entirely. In some instances, counterfeit drugs have also been found to contain other active substances that are hazardous to health.
“Laboratory test results confirm that Codrela does not contain the active ingredient codeine as stated on its packaging, but instead contains dextromethorphan and chlorphenamine maleate (CTM),” said Taruna.
He noted that Codrela was a counterfeit drug discovered at a facility in East Java. Meanwhile, Trivam Fliege was identified through monitoring of online facilities, specifically marketplaces. This product claims to contain 20 mg of the active ingredient propofol. This medicine is being misused by criminals because it can induce a loss of consciousness in victims.
Taruna Ikrar mentioned that in the medical field, propofol is used as an intravenous general anaesthetic for the induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia and sedation during medical procedures or intensive care.
Regarding both findings, BPOM has taken various follow-up actions. Further supervision, intelligence tracing, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the source and the parties producing and/or distributing these counterfeit medicines.
BPOM is also intensifying its monitoring of online media through cyber patrols. From 2023 to March 2026, BPOM successfully identified 183 links on marketplaces selling the counterfeit Trivam. The results of this monitoring have been followed up with recommendations to take down links promoting these fake products.
As a form of public protection, BPOM and the Jakarta Metropolitan Regional Police (Polda Metro Jaya) conducted a joint operation on 30 October 2025, which successfully uncovered a large-scale illegal pharmaceutical warehouse in West Jakarta. From the enforcement action, which had a total economic value of Rp2.74 billion, BPOM seized several pieces of evidence, including illegal Trivam (Propofol).
He stated that the agency will take firm action against any criminals proven to be distributing counterfeit medicines, both online and offline, in accordance with applicable laws. The applicable articles, he said, include Consumer Protection laws and Law Number 17 of 2023 concerning Health.
As a form of transparency and public protection efforts, BPOM has also provided a risk communication channel for counterfeit medicines that can be accessed by the public via the official BPOM website at https://www.pom.go.id/hot-issue/temuan-obat-palsu. Through this channel, information regarding authentic and counterfeit products can be viewed to increase public awareness of fake products in circulation.
BPOM also routinely updates information on counterfeit medicine findings through risk communication channels on the official BPOM website and social media.
“BPOM also urges the public to immediately report to BPOM if they find the circulation of Codrela and Trivam Flises, whether in offline or online facilities,” said Taruna.
The Head of BPOM also advised the public to be more careful before purchasing or consuming medicine.
Ensure that medicines are obtained from official facilities, such as pharmacies. For online purchases, the public is reminded to only transact through facilities that have obtained a Pharmaceutical Electronic System Provider (PSEF) permit from the Ministry of Health or those that have partnered with a PSEF. Additionally, the public is requested to always apply the ‘Cek KLIK’ principle—checking Packaging, Label, Marketing Authorisation, and Expiry date—and to utilise the BPOM Mobile application or the website cekbpom.pom.go.id to ensure product legality.
