BPKS Transformation Could Alter Sabang's Economic Future
JAKARTA – Strengthening the governance of the Sabang Free Trade Zone and Free Port Management Agency (BPKS) is considered a key factor in optimising Sabang’s economic potential. The institutional transformation is also viewed as a way to increase investment attractiveness while reinforcing Sabang’s position as a free trade and free port zone.
Member of Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Doni Akbar, stated that the transformation of BPKS must focus on more professional, transparent, and adaptive institutional governance in response to global economic dynamics. He believes this step serves as an important foundation for increasing investor confidence and accelerating the development of the Sabang free trade and free port zone.
Doni assessed that Sabang holds a strategic position in both local and international geopolitics. With this position, BPKS needs to continuously transform to become a professional, competitive institution capable of attracting quality investment.
According to Doni, good governance will optimise Sabang’s potential through the development of the maritime, trade, logistics, tourism, fisheries, and marine sectors. Sabang’s geographical position is also seen as capable of supporting the area’s development as an international logistics centre.
“The transformation of BPKS is not only oriented towards institutional improvement but is also directed at optimising Sabang’s potential as a centre for trade, logistics, tourism, fisheries, marine affairs, the maritime economy, and international ports. If developed, this potential will undoubtedly become a lever for economic growth and create new jobs,” said the Golkar Party politician.
Doni noted that the success of BPKS’s transformation requires synergy between the central government, local government, business actors, and all stakeholders. He said the DPR is ready to support the area’s development strategy as long as it has a clear and measurable programme.
“I am quite optimistic that BPKS can develop into an increasingly advanced economic zone, capable of attracting investment and making a significant contribution to national economic growth,” Doni concluded.
