BPKN Fully Supports Mandatory Halal Rules Taking Effect on 18 October 2026
Jakarta (ANTARA) – National Consumer Protection Agency (BPKN) Chair and Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Deputy Chair for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Cooperatives Mufti Mubarok has expressed full support for the mandatory halal regulations, which are due to take effect on 18 October 2026.
However, he warned that implementation of the policy must not become a new burden for micro-businesses, particularly street vendors, who have limited capital and access to information.
“Halal certification requirements are a strategic step towards providing certainty and protection for consumers. However, the government must ensure that small businesses receive guidance, simplified procedures and assistance with halal certification in accordance with the applicable rules,” Mufti said in an official statement issued in Jakarta on Sunday.
He said he fully supported the mandatory halal rules in principle, as they were important for giving consumers a sense of security, certainty and confidence.
Mufti said the policy needed to be accompanied by practical action on the ground. The rules’ success should not be measured solely by whether they take effect on time or by the number of certificates issued, but also by businesses’ readiness to comply.
“As the rules’ implementation approaches, the government must ensure that information reaches all businesses, including street vendors. They need to know what they must comply with, how to apply for halal certification and where to seek assistance. Limited information and capital must not make it difficult for them to meet the requirements,” Mufti said.
He also stressed the importance of protecting consumers’ right to clear and accurate information about products.
