Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial (BPJS) Ketenagakerjaan has launched three Griya Pekerja housing complexes in Batam to meet the needs of workers for decent and affordable accommodation. The three housing units are located in Bumi Lancang Kuning, Muka Kuning, and Kabil. The occupancy rate has reached 98 per cent, with around 5,000 active workers as residents. This data indicates the high demand for decent housing in strategic industrial areas. BPJS Ketenagakerjaan President Director Saiful Hidayat emphasised that Griya Pekerja represents a tangible expression of the organisation’s care for its participants, in line with its principles of coverage, care, and credibility. “Griya Pekerja is a real contribution from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan in supporting the government’s vision to achieve comprehensive welfare and protection for all Indonesian workers,” said Saiful in a press release received by Kompas.com on Sunday (5/4/2026). Furthermore, he stated that Griya Pekerja also serves as support for the Three Million Houses programme initiated by President Prabowo Subianto. The programme aligns with the government’s Asta Cita, particularly in efforts to build quality and competitive human resources (SDM), as well as to improve welfare for all Indonesians, including workers. It should be noted that Griya Pekerja is built near industrial areas, with the aim of improving travel efficiency and reducing traffic accident risks for workers. In addition to providing housing for workers, the presence of Griya Pekerja is also seen to have an economic impact on the surrounding community, particularly through the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM) in the housing environment. Saiful said that his visit to Griya Pekerja in Batam was not only to inspect the facilities but also to engage in direct dialogue with the workers living in the area. “The most important thing is that we also want to hear directly from some residents about what the workers feel when using the Griya Pekerja facilities,” he said. One story came from a worker from Duri named Reno, who has been living in Griya Pekerja Lancang Kuning, Batam, for eight months. According to him, the available facilities are adequate, security is supportive, and the rental costs are affordable. “The significant benefits felt by the workers become the drive for us to continue developing Griya Pekerja, so that more workers can experience decent and affordable housing,” said Saiful.
