BPJS Ketenagakerjaan Aims to Provide Social Security for 2.1 Million Religious Teachers
The Social Security Agency (BPJS) Ketenagakerjaan is strengthening protection for informal workers in the religious ecosystem through a strategic collaboration with the Indonesian Mosque Youth and Teen Communication Agency (BKPRMI). This collaboration targets social security coverage for 2.1 million religious teachers, imams, and religious leaders throughout Indonesia.
The signing of the Cooperation Agreement (PKS) took place in Jakarta on Thursday, May 14th, and was attended by the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan. During the event, the Coordinating Minister symbolically handed over BPJS Ketenagakerjaan membership cards to representatives of religious teachers as a form of government support for those engaged in religious outreach.
The Director of Membership at BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, Agung Nugroho, stated that this step is part of a strategy to strengthen the Coverage pillar to reach vulnerable groups.
“The presence of the state through BPJS Ketenagakerjaan is to ensure that no worker is left alone when facing social and economic risks,” said Agung, as quoted in a statement on Friday, May 15th.
The General Chairman of the BKPRMI, Nanang Mubarok, explained that through Government Regulation No. 50, religious teachers as Non-Wage Recipient Workers (BPU) receive a 50% discount on contributions. Participants only need to pay a contribution of IDR 8,400 per month to receive protection for Work Accident Insurance (JKK) and Death Insurance (JKM).
As of May 2026, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan has recorded that it has paid benefits to 78,360 informal workers with a total value of IDR 799.1 billion. This value includes death benefits, occupational accident treatment without cost limits, and educational scholarships for participants’ children.
“Through this collaboration, we are expanding the scope of social security so that religious teachers, preachers, and mosque administrators can carry out their service with more peace of mind, focus, and security,” added the Director of Membership at BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, Agung Nugroho. (RO/Z-10)
